Waterside Sipping at 5 Coastal Winery Destinations

by | Apr 30, 2019

Spend a part of your spring visiting different wineries along the Pacific Northwest Coast by sitting oceanside and drinking a unique blend or new-to-you varietal. The northern West Coast line makes for a perfect day or weekend getaway, offering wine, beach fun, shells, sea creatures and  hikes. Don’t miss out on the different unique wineries along the coast. Sip local wine and experience beautiful views.

Cranberry Road Winery

Found just 7 minutes on foot from the ocean in Westport, Washington, this winery offers handcrafted wines made from Eastern Washington vineyards, focused on the drinking and dining experience. Cranberry Road is the local fine dining go-to destination as it regularly puts its wines on display with its full-service restaurant — try dishes like local Dungeness crab with the 2016 Columbia Valley Chardonnay. Make sure to check out the Grays Harbor Lighthouse only 2 miles away from the winery.

Flying Dutchman Winery

This small, family-owned wine-lover’s destination is located on a bluff in Otter Rock, Oregon, where it has overlooked the ocean since 1997. The astonishing view of the sea combined with barrels on the inside of the building makes you feel like you’re on a real ship — but with wine like the award-winning Winter’s Hill Vineyard 2016 Pinot Noir instead of rum. It is the only winery located directly on the Oregon Coast. Wander around the cliffside garden or go across the street and visit the Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area. The reserve features beaches, tide pools and a large bowl carved into the rock by waves. Make sure to visit during low tide for extra fun.

Depoe Bay Winery

A oddity as well as marvel, Depoe Bay Winery, in its namesake Oregon city, is tucked into of a cave directly off of the 101 and across from the Pacific Ocean. Indulge in this eccentric drinking experience with wine tasting and the smell of seawater to remind you that any moment on the Coast the is worth the visit. Customers can donate a dollar for charity in exchange for a signed dollar bill left hanging in the cave forever while sipping their Oregon Blackberry dessert wine. Afterwards make sure to take a drive down the Pacific Coast Byway and see multiple viewpoints.

Noble Estate Winery

Get a sweeping view of Newport’s historic bayfront at this waterfront winery, a third location for the Eugene, Oregon, maker. Watch ships come and go as you drink wine from Noble Estate’s partnering vineyard in Eugene. This family-owned establishment has award-winning wine, like 2016 Riesling, that heightens any activity the day may bring you. Spend the day shopping the beach themed town or go to the beach where you might be able to catch famous Sea Lion Docks with real sea lions in action. Walk three minutes from the winery and experience a natural phenomenon for free.

Westport Winery Garden Resort

This coastal winery not only touts two seaside locations — the garden resort in Aberdeen, Washington, and the winery in Seaside, Oregon — but it also pours over 30 different wines and ciders on the daily in both tasting rooms. The Garden Resort in Aberdeen also has the Sea Glass Grill open each day for wine-friendly eats, in addition to its killer views of the water. The property, just up the road from the waterfront of South Arbor, also includes its prestigious gardens, ranging in diversity from a plots specifically for children or dogs to one inspired by Hawaii and another by English cottage gardens. The gift shop sells kites, trinkets and other fun activities for the kids to entertain themselves with while you drink wine, like the nonvintage Willapa Pinot Gris and Riesling blend.
