The Rocks District’s annual celebration brings together acclaimed winemakers, collectors and community supporters for a weekend of wine and purpose

MILTON-FREEWATER, Ore. – August 14, 2026 – The Rocks District Winegrowers (RDW) once again brought wine and community together for a greater purpose at the Basalt Bash Barrel Auction, held July 24–25, 2026 in Milton-Freewater. RDW’s second annual Basalt Bash will contribute $85,000 to the Milton-Freewater School District in support of student mental health services. Over the first two years the contributions have amounted to $160,000.

Building on the momentum of last year’s inaugural event, the Basalt Bash welcomed winemakers, collectors, industry partners and community members back to Milton-Freewater for two days celebrating the distinctive wines of the Walla Walla Valley and the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, as well as the people behind them.

“The Basalt Bash was created around a simple idea: that our wines can bring people together for FUN to address something much bigger than wine,” said Steve Robertson, president of Rocks District Winegrowers and founder of the Basalt Bash & Barrel Auction. “It has been incredibly uplifting to see our growers, winemakers, partners, sponsors and guests rally together in support of this community. This is exactly the human-to-human, community bridge-building we envisioned for The Bash.”

The 2026 Basalt Bash Barrel Tasting & Auction showcased the collaborative spirit of Rocks District Winegrowers and the overarching Walla Walla Valley wine community through 22 exclusive auction lots, including 20 one-of-a-kind wines and first-time collaborations, created specifically for The Basalt Bash.

Guests also gathered Friday for a global Syrah Masterclass, led by Patrick Comiskey, author of American Rhone. A Wine & Tamale Tasting with live mariachi music at Watermill followed. Saturday was the signature barrel tasting and silent auction at Davis Orchards, where bidders had the opportunity to taste and acquire world-class wines unavailable anywhere else.

The weekend paired serious wines with an intentionally celebratory atmosphere, creating an experience rooted as much in community as in wine. This year’s top auction lot, Cimento, generated $19,727 and also received the highest single-case bid of $2,100.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Rocks District Winegrowers and everyone who supported the Basalt Bash for continuing to invest in our students’ futures,” said Aaron Duff, Superintendent of the Milton-Freewater Unified School District. “This generosity directly strengthens our ability to provide students with access to critical mental health resources locally, when and where they need them. Beyond the financial impact, it sends an important message to our students and families that this community is behind them and deeply invested in their well-being and success.”

For RDW, the Bash’s impact represents something larger than the success of a single event: an opportunity for the wine community to focus on an enduring platform that strengthens the place it calls home.

“We recognize that we have something incredibly special to nurture in The Rocks District, but our community is what makes this opportunity possible,” Robertson added. “The Basalt Bash allows for a way to celebrate globally distinctive winegrowing, while investing in the people who live here. That larger, collective, positive purpose is what will continue to drive this life-changing event forward.”

The Basalt Bash & Barrel Auction could not be possible without the many volunteers, agencies, sponsors, partners and commercial entities that support this mission. Rocks District Winegrowers extends its deep appreciation and gratitude to 2026 event and venue partners The Marcus Whitman, The Walls, Watermill Winery, Bionic Wines, Walla Walla Land Company, House of Smith Wines, Milton-Freewater Unified School District and the City of Milton-Freewater, as well as logistics partners Dream Ride Charters & Wine Tours, Northwest Touring, Winery Fulfillment Services and Results Partners
