Beer 101: Class is in Session at Oregon’s North Coast

Get a good education during two weekends of beer-based curriculum at Oregon’s North Coast “brew-niversity” and take a crash course in Beer 101, Oct. 18-20 and 25-27. Asoria-Warrenton, Seaside and Cannon Beach have come together to offer a series of tap-takeovers, beer and food pairings, educational beer sessions and more,during this unique and interactive beer event.

Celebrate the region’s growing presence of craft beer and microbreweries as you learn about Oregon’s brewing history while tasting from a selection of local beers. Enjoy food and beer pairings offered at participating restaurants and even sip on a sudsy collaboration from Astoria Brewing Company, Fort George Brewery, Seaside Brewing Company and Bill’s Tavern & Brewhouse.

Explore The Alchemy of Glassware and Tasting with Lisa “the Beer Goddess” Morrison on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Fort George Brewing in Astoria, where she will educate guests on the importance of glass shape and aroma when pouring and serving beer. Homebrewers will love a Behind-the-Scenes and Tasting at U Street Pub & Eatery on Oct. 19-20, where owner Teri Carpenter will discuss U-Street’s “MacGyver style” operational system as well as techniques on how to properly pour.

Want to brush up on your history? The Oregonian’s John Foyston will take you on a tour of Oregon Beer Through the Ages during an educational talk and tasting exploring Oregon’s brewing history on Friday, Oct. 25, at Astoria’s Wet Dog Cafe. Foyson will also be in attendance at Seaside Brewing Company’s Brewers Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 26, where he will discuss how to excellently pair food and beer, during a four-course and five-beer dinner at Seaside Brewing.

Other activities include the Ale of Two Cities and Astoria Ale Trail beer tours, and a contest to name the North Coast breweries’ collaborative beer. With two weekends and a catalog of courses, this interactive education is the perfect way to spend a weekend (or two) on Oregon’s breathtaking North Coast.
