PDX Summit of Cider: The Pinnacle of Fruit-Forward Innovation

Next weekend is the 2013 Portland edition of what began in Seattle three years ago and has promptly become Northwest cider’s main event: Cider Summit, “the largest-ever tasting of artisanal ciders from around the world.” The series, which as of this year holds a conference in Chicago as well as in Portland and Seattle, brings industry professionals and connoisseurs together with general fun-lovers and newbies for a sampling of all things fermented from fruit.

Cider Summit PDX features 104 ciders from as near as Powell Boulevard and as far as Spain, and is expected to draw a crowd to Elizabeth Caruthers Park next Friday and Saturday, June 21 and 22. Attendees will enjoy the park’s waterfront location on the longest days of the year as they sip all manners of cider from this year’s commemorative glassware. Meanwhile, cideries’ owners and cidermakers will also be in attendance, making this an interactive and somewhat guided tour de cidre.

“Interest in artisanal cider is exploding right now, and this event is the premier sampling opportunity for both the cider enthusiast and cider curious,” says Alan Shapiro, the event’s co-founder. The chance to compare the Northwest’s best offerings with European ciders is rare among local tasting events, and provides a learning and networking opportunity for industry insiders.

The event is distinctly Northwestern, though. PDX’s 2013 additions sound like they’re out of a Portlandia sketch: a swanky dog lounge, bicycle valet parking and a much-expanded food selection (sausages, chocolates, Ya Hala). As always, take-home bottles are available for purchase. That plus live music promises to keep the crowds in high spirits.

Friday, June 21: 3-8pm & Saturday, June 22: 12-6pm || Elizabeth Caruthers Park, South Waterfront, Portland || Tickets: $25
