Drifters: Inn at Red Hills

by | Feb 19, 2014

We’re all familiar with farm-to-table dining. Inn at Red Hills is winery-to-bed accommodation. Make that fine, world-class wineries to sumptuous, elegant and well-dressed bed accommodation.

Perfectly situated at the west end of Dundee, Ore., Inn at Red Hills is—almost alarmingly—tucked into a small strip mall and across the second floors of two adjacent buildings separated by a well dressed stone courtyard. This modern construction was sensitively built to reflect the wine country aesthetic, and mirrors a kind of French countryside chateau. Okay, so the fronting proximity to the busy 99-West isn’t as romantic as in France, but the proximity to Dundee and the Willamette Valley’s top wineries make up for it. Light sleepers can ask to face away from the busy road if desired, though once your head hits the fluffy pillows on your Sleep Number beds, chances are sleep won’t be an issue. Oversized windows and bathrooms are other amenities in each of the 20 unique rooms, each with different layouts, sizes and views. Most have small sitting areas—to reflect on the day’s wine tastings perhaps. They certainly are all well equipped with corkscrew, ice wine and ice bucket.

Though the property’s lauded farm restaurant, Paulée, has shuttered in recent weeks, a new restaurant is scheduled to open this month in its sleek space. In the interim, the nearby Babica Hen will serve fresh breakfast, lunch and dinner daily with locally sourced, quality ingredients including those grown on site in their own garden. There are also a number of other restaurants in Dundee and nearby towns that will keep you well sated. When I stay at Inn at Red Hills I basically take breakfast, lunch and dinner at Red Hills Market, a few minutes walk away. This incredible delicatessen/store/bistro/wine shop/café is one of my favorite finds in Oregon, or really anywhere for that matter. It’s worth staying nearby when you’ve a craving for wood fired pizza or bacon rosemary roasted filberts.

An easy 45 minute drive from Portland, and in the heart of Willamette Wine Country, Inn at Red Hills is a welcome, convenient and cozy addition to the somewhat scarce wine country accommodation options.
