Knudsen Vineyards 2012 Estate Pinot Noir

by | Oct 1, 2014

Fourth-generation grape-growers Knudsen Vineyards have finally produced and bottled an estate wine—and in one of the most approachable vintages to date. The four children of pioneering Oregon viticulturist, Cal Knudsen, have launched their winery with the release of their 2012 Pinot Noir. Long-time growers for Earth and Argyle’s sparkling wine gems, the Knudsen family has the foundation and proficiency to bring balance and structure to the ripe, warm 2012 vintage. With 228 acres, 130 of which are under vine, the vineyard also is certified for Salmon Safe and Low Input Viticulture and Enology.

The initial vintage is a mere 100 cases and is going, going… mostly to club members and those who ask nicely. The nose is bright with fruit tones of dark cherry and black raspberry mixed in with aromas of tomato leaf, earth, cumin and cola. On the palate, the dark berries flesh out amidst sweet baking spices but sharp acidity cuts through and brings dusty tannins with it. Generous and juicy, this release stands as a solid start to the wines of Knudsen Vineyards.
