We Dig: DIY Beer Bottle Cap Crafts

by | Feb 11, 2014

Pop a top again with crafts for craft beer lovers.

A clattering box of beer bottle caps isn’t what I typically envision when brainstorming potential reusables for craft projects. Sure, you can stick a bottle cap on anything and call it “crafty,” but that doesn’t mean that it actually is. Luckily for craft beer lovers yearning to put their cap collection to good use, there are a handful projects inspired by beer bottle toppers worth getting excited about.

Get organized

If you pride yourself in your organizational prowess, you know how much more rewarding that feeling is when you achieve your efficiency in style. Personalize your office and stay organized at the same time by upcycling your used bottle caps into these customized thumbtacks featured on eHow.

Gently score the inside of a bottle cap (this roughs the surface so that glue will bond to the cap), apply a small amount of craft glue, and insert a picture that has been cut to fit the cap to create a uniquely framed image. Next, apply a small dot of contact cement to the back of the cap and adhere a thumbtack to form a personalized pushpin ideal for adorning your bulletin board. Or, if you’d prefer to outfit your fridge and other metal surfaces, exchange the thumbtack for a small magnet.

Want to make these thumbtacks and magnets even better? Fill the cap to the rim with a layer of clear casting resin to create a polished, glass-like layer over your image.

For the bride and groom

As craft beer continues to popularize, many people pay tribute to these celebratory suds during their wedding ceremonies. For the beer-centric bride and groom, deck out your day with filigree of the beer cap variety.

Accent the groom’s boutonniere with a bottle cap from his favorite brewery, and create your own take on this charming idea from Glendalough Manor Bride. You can make this an even bigger ode to beer by making the boutonniere out of dried hops and wheat.

During the reception, let guests know where they’ll be seated by decorating place settings with bottle caps. This project inspired by the The Wedding Tree can be achieved using a random assortment of caps, or, add some flare without straying from your theme by collecting caps that match the colors used in your wedding.

Valentine’s Day messages

Valentine’s Day is just a stone’s throw away. Instead of handing out traditional Valentines, surprise your loved ones with personalized beer caps bearing messages of love. Follow the directions for DIY Personalized Bottle Caps on the Outlaw Mom, and boast your love with these festive caps.

Of course, in order to make these projects, you’ll need to have a collection of caps. Make your own wall mounted beer bottle opener by modeling the example found on the blog Girl, Wife, Mom.

These easy crafts are quick, fun and a great way to upcycle your old beer caps. Start your collection now!
