The Sounds and Tastes of Summer

by | Jun 6, 2013

After a warm summer’s day spent lounging in the sun, the ideal way to complete this leisurely time is with an intimate concert at a nearby winery while enjoying a restful beverage. Summer concert series’ are beginning to be announced throughout the Northwest with a variety of acts from rock to jazz and Latin.

In Washington, one of the most prominent of these venues is Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville. Some notable acts dawning their stage this year will be the infamous Robert Plant & The Sensational Shape Shifters, Counting Crows, former Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines and crooner Harry Conick Jr.

Although acts like Counting Crows have already sold out there, the band will be playing at Maryhill Winery’s amphitheater in Goldendale, Wash. on July 14, the night before. Along with them, other summer evenings can be spent looking out from the amphitheater’s stunning view of the Columbia River with the likes of Daryl Hall and John Oates, and Willie Nelson & Family.

Always in the music mood, some wineries offer sweet tunes all summer long—Richland, Wash.’s Bookwalter Winery has live local jams Wednesday through Saturday and their neighbor, Barnard Griffin Winery, has local acts in their wine bar and eatery on Friday and Saturday nights.

In British Columbia, Mission Hill Family Estate will host country singer LeAnn Rimes, the multi-genre Portland, Ore. group Pink Martini and jazz artist Chris Botti, who’s worked with Michael Bublè, Sting, John Mayer and many others.

Oregon’s Penner-Ash Wine Cellars are putting on their own pair of concerts in August, both including a picnic prepared by local chefs, a bottle of their wine, music and charity. The first evening is with “X Factor” star and songwriter for Elton John and Jennifer Lopez, Leroy Bell on August 4. Proceeds from this show will go to support the Friends of the Children organization.

Following on August 11 is singer-songwriter Lori McKenna with Portland’s Stephanie Schneiderman opening. Proceeds from this concert will help ¡Salud!, an organization who’s mission is to support Oregon’s seasonal vineyard workers and their families.

Either way, you’re bound to run into music sometime this summer that’ll make you sit-back, relax and make your sips that much more harmonious.
