The Drayman House: A Cellar with Soul

by | Nov 5, 2025

In the heart of downtown Walla Walla, a century-old rail freight storage building has been reborn as the Drayman House — a place that elevates the concept of a wine storage facility. Co-owner Chelsea Tennyson, who manages the space with her husband, Tyler, describes it as “a third place” that lies somewhere between home and a restaurant or wine bar — a social haven for connection, conversation and curated wine experiences.

The couple’s journey began nearly a decade before the Drayman House opened its doors in April 2024. Tyler envisioned a private wine storage facility in Walla Walla, recognizing what he called a “missing link” in the valley’s wine offerings. The vision crystallized after visiting the Oregon Wine Reserve in Portland, a business that combined secure wine storage with social interaction. “When a building in Walla Walla with substantial subterranean square footage became available, we knew it was perfect,” Chelsea recalls. “We just had to figure out how to use the 5,500 square feet upstairs.”

That upstairs space is now the soul of the Drayman House. The 18‑month renovation project transformed the 1920s-era building. Everything was reimagined to provide a contemporary and welcoming atmosphere where members can mosey behind the bar to pour a glass, retrieve wine from their lockers, or relax over impromptu conversations. “We want members to feel like they are in their own kitchen bar,” says Chelsea. “That’s where the action happens.”

With a blend of passionate enthusiasts, collectors and wine industry professionals, membership has quickly grown to nearly 240. Storage options range from nine‑case lockers to walk‑in cellars holding 100 cases, but it’s the camaraderie that draws people in. “It has become more than we ever imagined,” Chelsea notes. “Seeing people meet here, share bottles and form friendships — that’s what’s special.”

The club’s offerings go well beyond storage. A complimentary sommelier consultation is offered to each member to assist with cellar management or guide new wine explorations. Tastings and educational events led by Master Sommelier candidates Robert Gomez and Kaleigh Brook create experiences that facilitate a sense of togetherness. A wine delivery service from Full Pull Wines in Seattle is also available.

Additionally, every component of the design incorporates a strong sense of inclusivity. “We wanted to move away from that stuffy, old-fashioned club vibe,” Chelsea explains. “It was important the environment felt as inviting for women as it does for men.” This intent is evident throughout the interior, which has a chic-yet-unpretentious look, much like Walla Walla itself.

Chelsea finds joy in seeing connections unfold organically. “We’re all so attached to our screens these days,” she says. “Seeing people connect face-to-face over a shared love of wine, that’s the magic.” With plans already in motion to increase seating options and provide a variety of new events, the Drayman House continues to evolve.

At its core, the Drayman House isn’t just where people store their wine — it’s where they also share and enjoy a space to unwind, trade stories, and rediscover what it means to gather.
