WINE WEDNESDAY: Mission Hill Winery 2009 Oculus Red, Okanagan Valley

Okanagan Valley’s Mission Hill Winery takes the region’s allegedly “breathtaking views” to another level – from the sweeping estate vineyards throughout the valley to the facility that remarkably mirrors a modern monastery, the family estate truly is a visual experience in its own. The 2009 Oculus, a Bordeaux-inspired blend, matches the winery’s design for elegance and terroir of the Okanagan. From select clusters of designated blocks in the estate Osoyoos and Oliver vineyards, the flagship wine is a blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Dark stone fruit of both plum and pit, black currant, anise and coffee beans emerge from the glass with savory tones of herbs and meat to follow. Gentler on the palate than the boastful nose, the wine is approachable yet complex with sophistication unseen by its regional peers in this category. Finish is tight with tannins and built to age.
