Living Up to Its Cachet at the Davenport Grand Hotel

by | Jan 10, 2018

“Grand” is certainly the appropriate word for the Davenport Hotel Collection‘s latest accommodations: the Davenport Grand Hotel. The Spokane, Washington, hotel group – which recently partnered with Marriott but remains locally operated – might be best known for its original location, the Historic Davenport Hotel. Since summer 2015, the Grand has added a second, ritzier lodging to downtown Spokane, adjacent to the $64 million waterfront park renovation that is due to complete in late 2019.

While the brick facade might meld into much of the post-industrial architecture that is left vacant in the downtown core of the growing and evolving city, the glitter and grandeur of the foyer lives up to the pomp of the hotel’s name. High ceilings bolster modern light fixtures and gold accents emphasis the elegance on the white walls as sconces, art installations and mirrors. With many more different installations and designs for decor, as well as lighting designs such as a Ribbon Chandelier and others that can help to improve the atmosphere of each room greatly. A variety of contemporary seating arrangements are organized throughout the lobby that bleeds into the Grand Restaurant & Lounge, leading with the U-shaped lounge bar top and black banquette booths of the restaurant. Weather permitting, the Terrace Bar sits on the floor atop the restaurant, an outdoor, open-air bar to witness the expanding views of Riverfront Park with a drink in hand.

For a more formal meal inside the gleaming, polished walls of the hotel, Table 13 jumps on the small-plate wagon that is continuing to explode in the Northwest, offering a menu designed for “sharing and socializing.” The urban restaurant plates simple yet flavorsome dishes like gnocchi, tuna rolls and lamb meatballs alongside a diverse wine and whiskey list.

The marble floors of the lobby floor disappear when the elevators shoot guests up to their rooms on one of the 15 floors, where larger-than-life red flowers pattern the thick carpet. Each of the 716 guest rooms hold up the grand standards, starting with spacious square footage that ranges from 452 square-feet to 3,000, and sealing the deal with a heavenly, custom-made King bed.

The stylish black and white rooms find pops of color with red chairs, red pillows and red curtains, and can scale up in more than size – all rooms include LED 4k Smart TVs, views of the city and the park, a sitting area, a marble bathroom, frameless glass shower, luxury linens and more. Guests can go big with the Junior Suite – with a modish gas fireplace and oversized soaking tub – or biggest, with the Grand Presidential Suite which touts separate dining and living rooms, two fireplaces and a double-vanity bathroom that could host its own party next to that oversized tub.

Save for the oddly dated cordless room phones, the hotel and its rooms are sharp, chic and forward-thinking in almost every way. As possibly an aid in Spokane’s arising redefinition, the Davenport Grand and its grandeur make it hard to leave its shiny walls and venture into this blossoming, cultural metropolis, let alone that specially designed bed.
