Grazers: Moonstruck Chocolates and Multnomah Whiskey Library

by | Jul 24, 2015

“Decadent,” “rich,” and “sweet” are all words we easily familiarize with the flavors of chocolates and truffles, but Moonstruck Chocolate Co. has innovatively added a new adjective to the mix—savory.

With a flavor lineup more likely to end up on a dinner menu than in a chocolate box, Moonstruck is changing the way we experience dessert with their new line of savory mushroom shaped truffles developed by master chocolatier Julian Rose. These somewhat sweet treats can be a bit of a taste bud shock at first bite, but with a proper understanding of what you are in for, are deliciously interesting topics of conversation.

Coming in three distinct flavors, Fig with Indian Hot Curry, Tomato with Basil, and Porcini Mushrooms and Bacon, these truffles delight the more adventurous foodies while pairing well with a variety of boozy delights. Don’t believe me? I wouldn’t either, but fortunately Jordan Felix of The Multnomah Whiskey Library faced this challenge head on and created three pairings worth the perfect date night or evening indulgence.

The Tomato with Basil truffle explodes with a citrusy, tangy flavor that is nicely complimented by a classic Clubland cocktail. The white port, vodka and lemon bitters accentuate the subtle citrus of the chocolate without overwhelming it. In stark contrast, the Porcini Mushroom and Bacon truffle, a crowd favorite for its meaty decadence, goes best with an earthy bourbon in its most natural form—an Old Fashioned. The final truffle, Fig with Indian Hot Curry, was a bit too daring for me, but those with a hankering for spice will be in heaven.

Curious about these savory sweets? Grab a box and head over to The Multnomah Whiskey Library where you can thoroughly enjoy an experience and ambiance as rich and decadent as the treats about to be consumed. With brass and leather furnishings, a wall teeming with bottles and an impressively knowledgeable staff, it is hard not to feel engulfed in luxury. Although this establishment caters to their members, no reservations can be made on Mondays, which make for the best chance of a quick walk in. Not a fan of chocolate? No problem—choose from the vast array of small plates and accouterments including but limited to a selection of fine cheeses, pork belly & octopus, the salumi board or daily gourmet popcorn. There is sure to be a worthy snack to satiate any flavor needs.

Be it you are looking for conversation starter, a flavor to tantalize your taste buds or an innovative dessert, the unique flavor profiles of Moonstruck’s newest truffle trio are sure to result in the perfect evening delight.
