The McMenamins chain is known throughout Oregon and Washington for offering a wildly eclectic mix of spas, breweries, hotels, movie theaters and concert venues in their quirky gathering spaces. Now their distilling program, which started at their Troutdale location in 1998, has started to gain traction—and their latest summer offering, Aval Pota, should help cement their place in the pantheon of Northwest craft distillers.
Aval Pota is a fruity, fragrant apple whiskey, made with a base of Edgefield Distillery White Dog Whiskey to which was added pressed Hood River apples, organic brown sugar and cinnamon. But at a relatively light 33 percent ABV, Aval Pota—named for the Welsh and Old Irish words for “apple” and “pot still,” respectively—is still light enough to make a great accompaniment for summer adventures. It’s available for purchase at selected McMenamins locations and in cocktails at all 52 locations starting today.
