Drifters: The Jupitel Hotel

by | Dec 11, 2013

What we’re gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into the 1960s—or what might seem to be at the retro-fitted, motor-inn-turned-boutique-motel, the Jupiter Hotel in Southeast Portland. A notorious lodging landmark reveled for its live music, affordable rates and shabby-chic, minimalist rooms, the Jupiter Hotel is an idiosyncratic accommodation in a city that relishes in the rare and offbeat.

It’s rumored the Jupiter once booked rooms late night for the wee hour dwindlers of their on-site restaurant-bar-lounge, the Doug Fir. Safety first—rooms were supposedly rented at a lower rate for those who might not be able to get themselves home that evening, stocked with condoms at arm’s reach and other drunk Hail Marys like potato chips and water. A selection of 80 rooms are at the disposal of regular-timed guests, including bar-patio-side or “chill side” (aka street/quiet side) options and one spacious private king suite with a corresponding size bed, bar and party room for up to 25 guests. Rooms come equipped with flat screen TVs, a desk, wireless internet, device-friendly speakers, green amenities and chalkboard-painted doors to either mark your territory or leave your mark.

After, before or during your stay at the Jupiter, the Doug Fir is always an option for your dining, drinking or lounging purposes. With a newly rehabilitated and upgraded menu to match its culinary surroundings, the Doug Fir’s interior might look vintage but its bill of fare has stepped it up with a potpourri of diner dishes like mac and cheese, pulled pork sandwich, burgers, melts, wraps and more, including breakfast served from 7am-3pm and late night offerings lasting until last call.

Looking for the complete package? The Jupiter hooks it up depending on your needs. The PDX Urban Winery Experience is a self-guided tour via a handy, dandy map of the town’s urban wine scene. The package includes a 32-ounce Collectors’ Edition Jupiter Hotel Growler, 10 percent bottle discount at all participating urban wineries, $20 growler filing station gift certificate and complimentary tasting flights at the wineries. Rates range with dates for this online-exclusive offer.

Thinking beer or spirits might be more your thing? Try the Booze and Brews package, featuring a bucket of four chilled Rogue Ale’s Dead Guy Ale, two Distillery Row Passports, cocktail recipes, a gift certificate to the locally owned and roasted Water Avenue Coffee, complimentary parking and overnight accommodations for two.

If that’s not enough, the lobby moonlights as an art gallery for local artists, the concert calendar is stacked at the Doug Fir Lounge,  Jupiter Hotel logowear (eg. beanies, t-shirts, umbrellas), Charles Smith wines and water endorsed by P. Diddy/Mark Wahlberg are available for purchase, guests can rent one of the two on-site zipcars to get around town, hosts are able to book a party in the dreamBOX or thinkTANK event spaces and all are welcome to chillax on the open-air patio and soak in the urban hospitality.
