Restaurant-with-rooms debuts in a century-old former hotel in Historic Downtown Troutdale, gateway to the Columbia River Gorge

TROUTDALE, Ore. (October 26, 2026) – Hotel Reynard is an eight-room hotel and restaurant in Historic Downtown Troutdale opening Nov. 3, 2026. Perched at the gateway to the Columbia River Gorge, along America’s first scenic highway, the countryside-style inn and tavern comes from the team behind The Suttle Lodge & Boathouse. Named for the Reynard the Fox fable, Hotel Reynard pulls inspiration from the open road, English countryside inns and Oregon’s natural beauty to create a destination for travelers and locals alike. Reservations for overnight lodging and dining are available now.

Set in a century-old former hotel 20 minutes from Portland International Airport, Hotel Reynard is built around its tavern, where the warmth of a British pub meets Pacific Northwest craft and seasoned culinary talent. Hotel Reynard is minutes from the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood National Forest and the Sandy River. The access to nature is singular, making the inn-and-pub format feel purposeful. It’s a place for date night, a weekend out of the city, or a home base for exploring the Gorge from the cozy winter waterfall season to long summer nights.

The hotel features eight rooms in the European restaurant-with-rooms tradition poised atop the bar and restaurant. Upstairs, carefully appointed guest rooms offer a quiet place to stay. Rooms are individually stylized and curated for coziness and intimacy, featuring king beds, writing desks, window benches, and refreshment nooks, with the works of eight local artists featured throughout. Artists include: Emily Wise, Gabi Villaseñor, Jesse Kamerzell, Tylor Rogers, Jess Ackerman, Galen Ballinger, Carly Mick and Jeremy Okai Davis.

Tavern

The tavern menu is overseen by Chef Bill Wallender (Ava Gene’s, Quaintrelle) and features cuisine that is ingredient-driven and rooted in place, built around what grows here, what’s in season, and what can be sourced from nearby farms and fisheries. Large platters of vegetables, simply prepared fish, handmade pastas, hearty salads, roasted meats, oysters, preserves, and simple desserts. A neighborhood restaurant at heart, the kitchen draws inspiration from the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, and the Pacific Northwest, with seasonal menus built around regional produce and sustainable seafood. The menu will feature dishes like: Chanterelles & Soft Leeks on Toast, Mussel Stew, Whole Trout over charcoal and Warm Vermouth Pears.

For Reynard, co-owner and beverage director Sean Hoard (Teardrop, Suttle Lodge, Pal’s on Hayden Island) designed a cocktail program that leans into the classics and evolves with the seasons. A bit of a love letter to bartending in the early aughts with simple, timeless, and well-executed drinks. The wine list will heavily feature local producers as well as classics from France, Italy and Spain. Guinness on draft flows from a traditional European-style ceramic beer tower. In addition to a collaboration with Commensal Fermentation, the Reynard Premium, a European pale lager brewed with German hops and Volpes that is a classic, West Coast-style IPA brewed with Simcoe and Mosaic hops.

The restaurant will be open beginning Nov. 3 for lunch, dinner and drinks, daily 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Design

The design, led by hospitality designer Eric Cheong of North 45 Projects (Ace Hotel, Captain Whidbey), known for bringing sense-of-place hospitality to unsung destinations, Hotel Reynard offers a contemporary take on warm Americana and an embrace of Gorge gateway culture.

The ground-floor bar and restaurant give the property a welcoming community anchor while upstairs provides a sense of escape: eight intimate guest rooms, each with a distinct palette inspired by local plant species and the nearby Sandy River. Custom, hand-illustrated tile makes the space feel more like a collector’s find than a standard hotel.

In the restaurant, natural woods, pressed linoleum ceiling panels, unlacquered brass, custom millwork and leather upholstery establish a layered, balanced palette with artful touches, complementing the Pacific Northwest climate and culture. Large storefront windows and a direct connection to a private outdoor patio extend the dining experience and support seasonal programming. The overall character is timeless and approachable, handsome and feminine, unfussy, and grounded.

The guest rooms continue this clarity of intent through regional craft and botanical references. Bedrooms are laid out in a tidy and functional way—king beds, writing desks, window benches, and closets with a refreshment nook. Styled to be cozy and fresh, they’re outfitted with original artwork, locally made ceramic lamps, upholstery and custom millwork. Furnishings are designed in an American Shaker–inspired language, emphasizing clean lines, solid wood construction, and functional detailing. Subtle contemporary elements—refined lighting, modern palette and graphic upholstery—introduce a balance of tradition and modernity. The result is a thoughtful and cohesive guest experience that prioritizes longevity, regional production, and a strong sense of place without relying on overt stylistic gestures.
