Eternal Afternoon Green Tea Ale and Sage Awakening Yuzu + Sage bring a flavor-first, culinary approach to the hard tea category
SEATTLE, Wash. — September 2026 — Culture Shock isn’t trying to make another flavored alcoholic iced tea. The Seattle beverage maker is betting there’s room for something more ambitious: Craft Hard Tea.
Culture Shock is expanding its beverage lineup with two new releases: Eternal Afternoon Green Tea Ale and Sage Awakening Yuzu + Sage. The pair brings the company’s flavor-first approach to hard tea, with beverages built around tea, culinary ingredients and complexity rather than the sweeter profile commonly associated with conventional hard tea.
Eternal Afternoon is a 6.3% ABV Green Tea Ale with a bright, crisp and refreshing profile. Green tea takes center stage, creating a distinctive drinking experience that sits somewhere outside the usual definitions of hard tea and craft beer.
Sage Awakening pairs yuzu and sage at 5.7% ABV. Bright, aromatic citrus from the yuzu meets the herbal character of sage, creating a layered, culinary take on hard tea with an unexpectedly refreshing finish.
“We didn’t want to make another alcoholic iced tea,” said Thomas Dodson, founder of Culture Shock. “There are already plenty of those. We wanted to make something where the tea and the ingredients actually matter — something with the kind of flavor complexity you’d expect from a great beer, cocktail or glass of wine.”
So, What Is Craft Hard Tea?
For Culture Shock, the distinction starts with how the beverage is approached.
Rather than treating tea as a background flavor, Culture Shock builds the drinking experience around it. The company approaches recipe development through the lens of culinary flavor — considering aroma, acidity, balance, texture and finish.
That philosophy led to two distinctly different interpretations.
Eternal Afternoon — Green Tea Ale | 6.3% ABV
Bright, crisp and refreshing, Eternal Afternoon puts green tea at the center of the experience. It’s designed for the kind of afternoon that has no particular reason to end.
Sage Awakening — Yuzu + Sage | 5.7% ABV
Citrus-forward, herbal and unexpected, Sage Awakening combines aromatic yuzu with sage to create a more botanical expression of Craft Hard Tea.
“I come at beverage development from a chef and sommelier perspective,” Dodson said. “I’m thinking about acidity, aroma, balance and finish. That’s really what Craft Hard Tea means to us. We’re not taking iced tea and adding alcohol. We’re building a beverage around tea.”
Beyond Kombucha
The launch represents another step in the evolution of Culture Shock.
The independent Seattle beverage producer has expanded its portfolio to include Craft Hard Tea, Hard Seltzer, whole-fruit Kombucha and other category-defying beverages, united by a common philosophy: flavor comes first.
That willingness to move between established beverage categories is intentional.
“We don’t think people drink in categories anymore,” Dodson said. “Sometimes you want kombucha. Sometimes you want a beer. Sometimes you want a cocktail. We’re interested in making the drink you reach for because it tastes great, not because it fits neatly into a category.”
Available in Seattle and Beyond
Eternal Afternoon and Sage Awakening will be available at Culture Shock’s store on Commodore Way in Seattle, as well as at select bars, restaurants and retailers throughout the region.
The company expects the new Craft Hard Tea releases to introduce Culture Shock to drinkers who may not traditionally reach for kombucha but are looking for alternatives to conventional beer, hard seltzer and sweet hard tea.
“We want people to discover these the same way they discover a great craft beer or cocktail,” Dodson said. “At the bar, with dinner, at their neighborhood bottle shop, or coming directly to us. Craft Hard Tea deserves a place at that table.”
