Bayernmoor Cellars Features a Different Taste of Washington Wines

by | Apr 26, 2023

Located in Woodinville’s Woodin Creek Village, Bayernmoor Cellars’ tasting room provides a unique food and wine pairing experience that’s meant to inspire customers to explore their own pairings at home. And in a state where big, tannic reds flourish, this tasting room attempts to stand out with its Washington state Pinot Noirs.

Unlike other tasting rooms, which provide suggested foods to pair with their wines, Bayernmoors’s flights are solely food and wine pairings.

Guests have the option of choosing between two flights — Signature or Nothing But Pinot (NBP). Each flight is paired with chef-curated, seasonally changing small bites. Chef-curated sounds like a fancy affair but, as Bayernmoor Cellars Owner and Operator Kim Harris explains, the entirety of the tasting experience is directed at destigmatizing food and wine pairing, and is meant to showcase how easy it can be for guests to create their own pairings at home.

“I wanted [food and wine] to go together,” Harris says. “Then you can go home and you have ideas for what you can do.”

Bayernmoor’s breaking of stereotypes goes beyond tasting flights — it also extends to the type of grape varietals they grow. They have built a reputation on their Washington state Pinot Noir, a grape that is not as commonly grown within the state. But, Harris aims to prove that great Pinot Noir can come from here, too.

Harris makes wine that she likes. She describes her preference as “really well balanced” — wines with lower alcohol that are more rounded and softened.

The Bayernmoor Cellars estate vineyard has a six-acres of estate Pinot Noir that consists of 3-acres of Precoce Pinot Noir and 3-acres of 777 Burgundian clone.

The estate vineyard is family-owned and operated by Harris, her husband Larry and their two daughters, as well as their vineyard manager. It is located just 45 minutes from the Woodinville tasting room in Stanwood, Washington, within the Puget Sound AVA.

The vineyard practices sustainable farming as much as possible. Through the use of organic pesticides, composting of horse manure, allowing tractors to be the only vineyard-permitted vehicle and hand-harvesting, they are working so their land can last from generation to generation.

“We are leaving the land better for our children and our grandchildren,” Harris explains. “The land works for us just as much as we work for the land.
