“Wine Rocks (\ˈwīn ˈräks\, etymology: modern, Seattle – circa 2007): annual, not-for-profit, gathering of local winemakers, craft brewers, and musicians showcasing exceptional wine, unique distillates, outstanding beer, groovy tunes, savory fare, and one helluva of a backdrop.”
That’s not Merriam-Webster’s official definition, but the event has made a name for itself since its basic beginnings in 2006. What was once a profit-geared promotion for a local guitar showroom has shifted its focus toward sharing, with proceeds from the event threaded back to local charities. This year’s Wine Rocks charity recipient is Western Washington’s Food Lifeline, dedicated to ending regional hunger.
The ticket price, which stays $35 through June 15, gets you so much more than an average wine tasting. Quite apart from the good cause, breweries, distilleries, the city food truck brigade (including Jemil’s Big Easy, Marination Mobile) and local snackeries (including Tim’s Chips, Erin’s Popcorn) will join 32 wineries in serving the menagerie of guests expected July 11 at the breathtaking Pier 66 on Elliott Bay.
And then there are the stars of the show. Throughout the night a select few wine industry influentials will take the stage to showcase their talents, but not their celebrated vinological ones. The representatives of six wineries, including Jamie Brown (Walla Walla Valley), Victor Palencia (Jones of Washington) and Gordy Rawson (Chatter Creek) will likely sip through a few glassfuls of fine liquid courage, then take the stage one at a time to play solo for the crowd. While it remains a mystery where they find the time to develop musical talent between turning out fine wines, these wine industry folks’ appreciation for fine wine has coincided with one for good music – and we’re lucky it has.
