We Dig: The Decks of Idaho Breweries

by | Aug 11, 2015

Third stop in our series of breweries patios to post-up on this summer, we come to the notables of Idaho (see Washington and Oregon here). Whether a fan of green mountains or dry wide-open spaces, Idaho has something to offer outdoorsmen of every type—including the outdoor beer fan.

Idaho’s beer scene has been more of a slow burner in comparison to Oregon or Washington, but the results have been just as interesting. With now more than 20 breweries throughout the state, ranging in style and preference from the traditional to the extreme, a brewery tour of Idaho will take one through some of the more scenic terrain the Northwest has to offer.

Salmon River Brewing || McCall
The small resort town of McCall is situated on the southern shore of Payette Lake, right in the center of the Payette National Forest. Outdoor activities number in the thousands, but for those looking for a sit down, Salmon River Brewing offers some of the best patio seating McCall has to offer. Scoring a seat outside guarantees a view looking right onto Payette Lake, and live music during the summer. The lakeside brewery features over a dozen beers ranging in styles from Golden Wheat Beer to Dark Belgians, many of which are award winners. Pub food and snacks a plenty, with inviting indoor seating in case the patio is filled.

Grand Teton Brewing Co. || Victor
This could take the cake for one of the best outdoor seating areas anywhere. The view is spectacular: looking out from the patio, you are presented with a picturesque view of the Teton National Park. And added to that, lying between you and the distant towering mountains is nothing but pure nature. It’s the ideal place for a picnic… which is good because they don’t serve food. However, the wide array of beer and even soda options Grand Teton Brewing has to offer makes this a destination for the whole family. Currently the oldest operating brewery in the state, Grand Teton boasts a 10,000-barrel a year production, and distribution throughout Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. And all the while, the view stayed amazing.

Sockeye Grill & Brewery || Boise
If you’re seeking more of an urban vibe, Sockeye Grill & Brewery may be the place for you. Located in Boise, Sockeye offers an inviting outdoor patio with enough greenery to make you forget you’re in a populated area. First opening in 2002, Sockeye has since grown to two Boise locations, and become the first canning operation in Idaho since the 1950s. Featuring award-winning beers and excellent pub food, it’s the perfect place to relax on a hot summers day.

McCall Brewing Co. || McCall
Two words: Rooftop patio. A view from the rooftop seating offers a stellar view of Payette Lake in the distance, and mountain ranges beyond. Full disclosure though, the patio is only open during the summer, and seats fill up quick! First opening their doors in 1994, McCall Brewing quickly became a hotspot for locals, and a destination for out-of-towners, meaning it’s often crowded. However, an extensive and delicious lunch and diner menu insures you’ll have a seat. And the 10+ rotating beers McCall has available by draft or by the bottle makes this a perfect spot to enjoy a sunset aloft from the world.

Sun Valley Brewing Co. || Hailey
If the warm weather dry desert is more your scene, then the Sun Valley Brewing Co. is right up your alley. Located more or less right in the center of the state, Hailey is known for its outdoor hiking, horseback riding and fishing, as well as some winter skiing. A look out from the patio at Sun Valley Brewing takes in quiet outdoor views of the surrounding Sawtooth National Forest. Featuring more than a dozen beers, from the traditional to the seasonal, produced completely on site and utilizing almost entirely local ingredients, as well as an impressive lunch/diner menu.
