Old Ballard Liquor Co. Strawberry-Rhubarb Bounce

by | Aug 8, 2014

So simple, and yet so scarce. Such is the story of bounce, a category of fruit- and sugar-infused aged liqueurs once said to be among President George Washington’s favorite drinks. The libation has veritably fallen off the map over the last two centuries, but you can still find it in one place—and that’s Ballard, Seattle.

In Ballard, Old Ballard Liquor Company’s Lexi (best known for her aquavit expertise) makes both cherry and strawberry-rhubarb bounce based off former first lady Martha Washington’s posthumously discovered recipe by shaking the base-liquor-and-fruit mixtures frequently to ensure the maximum fruit flavor is extracted as the infusion ages. The vividly blush-pink Strawberry-Rhubarb sipper has all the punch of its eponymous pie filling, plus a brown-sugary complexity and clean tart bite at the end that’s perfect for summer mixing.
