Another pick from our Best of the Northwest 2015 spirits competition, Mt. Index Black Cat Coffee Liquor, winner of our dessert liqueur category, is made by Mt. Index Brewery & Distillery in the tiny, peak-surrounded town of Index, Washington. Crafted to honor the distillery’s omnipresent black cats, this liqueur is correspondingly dark and beguiling. Comparable in appearance to French-pressed coffee, the spirit’s aroma is laden with rich dark chocolate, while the palate mixes muscovado sugar and toffee notes with smokier espresso elements before ending with the lightest bite.
I’ve been particularly fond of this liqueur in a unique cocktail, called Up All Night, that I came across online. To make it, mix 1.5 ounces of Black Cat Coffee Liquor with half an ounce of Campari and a dash of Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters. Stir well with ice until thoroughly chilled, strain into a coupe glass and savor this surprisingly complementary combination of rich, sweet and bitter flavors.
