Crafting a gin from 100-percent organic British Columbian wheat has never been a small endeavor. Up until the last year, it might have been near impossible. Now, thanks to the slow drawing of the curtain of old BC liquor laws, a quickly-growing handful of craft distilleries in the province have been cleared for manufacturing—and one of them has just rolled out that very type of gin. The Liberty Distillery on Granville Island has taken on the government’s newly-posed challenge of working exclusively with raw agricultural materials from within province borders, composing from them a gin deemed worthy of the Seattle Ginvitational’s Best of BC title as well as the people’s choice Best Gin award at sold-out event B.C. Distilled.
Notoriously tricky to work with, the wheat base of Endeavor Gin yields a rare, subtly sweet smoothness to the liquor which takes well to the nuances imparted by twelve indigenous botanicals. As both the nose and palate go, juniper leads the charge, followed by citrus (lemon, orange, a suggestion of grapefruit), then by spice (peppercorn, subtle anise, light rosemary). The traditional flavor combination results in a London dry style of gin already proving itself to trained palates and the gin-drinking populace alike.
