How-to Homebrew

by | Feb 7, 2014

Northwest-made manufacturers help bring the brew to you.

While homebrewing itself is not a new trend, the Northwest has found numerous ways to help make homebrewing accessible to beer makers of all skill levels. Whether you’re an expert or haven’t touched a hop in your life, plenty of people and businesses are ready to get you started. It is not easy, but it is certainly a rewarding process. And once you have perfected your beer, you could learn how to make your own beer labels at Grogtag to create the perfect finished product!

For Your Kitchen

Brewing a glass of homemade craft beer in your own kitchen could become as easy as pushing a button. PicoBrew LLC, a company formed by brothers Bill and Jim Mitchell and friend Avi Geiger, may soon bring a new kind of appliance to your kitchen; an appliance that brews craft beer for you.

PicoBrew began by raising money via Kickstarter and of their original $150,000 goal, they raised a little more than $660,000. Described as an “espresso maker for beer,” the PicoBrew just needs to be filled with malted barley, hops and water on specific settings to make great beer. The option to create your own recipes makes it possible to make all kinds of beer. You might even be interested in Custom tap handles for your beer keg if you ever decide to create a brewery.

Seattle’s Fremont Brewing also promoted PicoBrew, and supports the appliance as a viable, time-saving option for brewing beer.

U Brew

The “U Brew” concept provides larger scale brewery equipment on location with staff to help you through your beer making process. They may have a drum heating system that could assist you with your journey to homebrewed beer.

West Coast U Brew (Vancouver) provides a brewery with steam-heated copper kettles for brewing of beer and wine. No need to be a member, just head down and the staff will help you choose a recipe and walk you through the process until you’re bottling your very own beer. || Tuesday through Sunday, varying hours

Gallaghers’ Where U Brew (Edmonds, Wash.) has been fulfilling the whims of both novice and maven garagistes with brewing (also cider and wine) and the aid of trusted brewery staffers for nearly two decades. They also support their in-house mug club with featured homebrewers poured on tap alongside Gallaghers-made beers. || Tuesday through Sunday, varying hours

At Portland U-Brew & Pub (Portland) you get to choose all aspects of your beer down to the flavor and color. All craft beers here are brewed from scratch at the fifteen-gallon scale. You get to grind, mash, boil and bottle all under the supervision of a helpful staff. || 11-6pm Tuesday through Sunday
