Bittered Sling Extracts Denman

by | Feb 7, 2014

Bitters. So you’ve heard about them in cocktails and food recipes. It’s now a buzzy, bandied about word, you see teeny bottles lining back bars, but you’re still not quite sure what it is or how to use it?

Chef Jonathan Chovancek and mixologist Lauren Mote created Bittered Sling Extracts and quickly carved out a niche both locally and internationally for their unique and diverse specialty cocktail creations. Bittered Sling is a retail line of high-quality, small-batch bitters and extracts fusing homegrown BC ingredients and flavors with premium quality and packaging. Bitters, once renowned for their healing, medicinal properties are an alcoholic, concentrated mix of herbs, fruits and spices. They are now used primarily as a flavoring agent for cocktail and culinary creations from savory to sweet.

Denman is inspired by Vancouver vibrant Denman Street and ‘hood, a fusion of color and flavor. Within this tiny bottle is a South Asian spice market, with tingling and piquant notes of pepper and warming, exotic spices. The Bittered Sling website provides helpful usage suggestions for every product, from cocktails to non-alcs to cooking. But I think Lauren and Jonathan would be happy if you struck out on your own Bittered Sling adventure, Denman Street or beyond.
