Drifters: Skamania Lodge

by | Nov 20, 2013

A short 45-minute drive from Portland, Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Wash., is the perfect escape from the bright lights and sounds of a big city. The drive to the lodge is a getaway in itself. Cruising east on I-84, you will pass breathtaking waterfalls, monolithic Beacon Rock, and many more snapshot-worthy landmarks before making the epic crossing of the Columbia River across the Bridge of the Gods.

Pulling into the lodge’s parking lot you will be impressed by the grandeux size and elegance of this wooded wonderland. Check-in is a snap, as Skamania’s knowledgeable staff will easily direct you to your room and the many offered amenities featured at the lodge.

After checking-in, head up to your room to take in the magnificent view of the grounds that awaits behind your curtains. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, and ideal for catching some z’s after an active day exploring the region.

Is your stomach growling? Skamania Lodge and executive chef James Wallace are on it. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner in the Cascade Dining Room, wake up early for breakfast at the River Rock, or in the summer you can venture outside to The Greenside Grille, located at the golf course. And of course, there’s always room service.

Skamania Lodge’s amenities are many. I enjoyed waking up early, cup of joe in hand, to take in the morning view fireside in Skamania Lodge’s lobby. Next it was to the Waterleaf Spa & Fitness Center for a dip in the pool and to relax in the popular outdoor hot tub. Want to get totally pampered? The spa offers everything from mud wraps and massages, to pedicures and much more. For the golf enthusiast, enjoy the Skamania Lodge 18-hole, par-70 Golf Course, complete with breathtaking views.

With the countless amenities offered at the lodge, you may find it unnecessary to leave the grounds until check-out time, but for those interested in exploring the surrounding area there is plenty to do. Some favorite attractions include a visit to the Bonneville Dam, venturing out on the Pacific Crest Trail, taking in the tranquility of Multnomah Falls, or enjoying a Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler dining and sightseeing cruise. And, if you get thirsty, there are lots of nearby watering holes including nearby Backwoods Brewing Company and Walking Man Brewing. For the wine drinker, visit sulfate-free and organic Klickitat Canyon and Columbia Gorge Winery.

So, if you’re looking to spend some time in the outdoors but want to leave your tent at home, Skamania Lodge is your go-to for luxurious amenities, excellent dining, and a rejuvenating experience.
