Drifters: Kimpton Vintage Plaza

by | Oct 16, 2013

When I was searching out hotels for my recent trip to Feast Portland, I stopped short when I got to Vintage Plaza. A Euro-style, turn-of-the-century, wine-themed hotel smack dab in the middle of downtown? With Kimpton’s funky style, legendary guest services, eco and zen forward policies, reasonable pricing, and—a BIG and—nightly complimentary wine tasting? Booked.

Truth be told, this wasn’t my first time staying at the conveniently located Vintage Plaza. I stayed for a night there probably eight years ago, enjoyed a clean, seasonal chef-driven Italian meal at the on-site Pazzo Ristorante, and yes, enjoyed the evening wine hour. I have stayed at various Kimpton properties since then, but haven’t had an opportunity to return to Portland’s Vintage Plaza. I’m so glad I revisited. The same gracious Kimpton service greeted me from doorman through smiley note-leaving housekeeping. Large, bright and quiet rooms removed me from the bustle of the busy downtown core (the property is just two blocks from Pioneer Courthouse Square and a short stroll from the Pearl District), opening windows in my room are always welcome, and high speed wi-fi is a huge bonus for someone on constant deadline. If I had time, I would have burned off Feast Portland calories by using of the yoga mat in my room, the 24-7 fitness center or one of the complimentary hotel bicycles. Instead, I made good use of the 5:00 pm wine reception in the lobby, shot a tasty espresso at Pazzoria Bakery & Café, and ogled pizzas coming out of Pazzo chef John Eisenhart’s open kitchen.

Great to revisit this Vintage—and I certainly won’t need to wait until next year’s Feast Portland to enjoy again.
