Drifters: Enzian Inn

by | Aug 5, 2015

In the very Bavarian town of Leavenworth, Washington, lederhosen, sausages and beer steins reign supreme, while the town’s ornate and antiquated architecture lends itself to an experiential weekend away or adventure-laden escape. Framed by massive mountains and the mighty Wenatchee River, Leavenworth doubles as an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise or a relaxing getaway for couples and families looking for a weekend retreat.

Just before entering the heart of this otherworldly wonderland, the Enzian Inn presents itself as a convenient and quaint stop where visitors can either drop off their bags before heading into town or rest up after a day exploring. Hand-painted accents and Old World decor set the stage while a lederhosen and drindl-draped staff offer friendly help to guests during check-in. Albeit a bit gimmicky at first, a second glance reveals the inn’s thoughtful authenticity and charm.

In addition to the inn’s convenience and allure, there are also countless accommodations guests can enjoy during their stay. With an outdoor pool, indoor pool, hot tub, on-site spa services and a complimentary breakfast buffet, it’s easy to lose track of time basking in the Enzian’s many comforts. Be sure to head upstairs for a morning meal where one of the inn’s most distinctive traditions delights guests daily. Every day, owners Bob Johnson and son, Rob, entertain guests during breakfast service with a traditional alphorn performance on the balcony. Donned in lederhosen and traditional hats, the performance adds to the inn’s undeniable magnetism.

Located a stone’s throw from downtown Leavenworth, shopping and dining are all within walking distance of the Enzian Inn, which makes coming and going easy. Explore beloved boutiques and the well-known hat shop before heading to München Haus for a top-notch brat and stein of beer in an outdoor setting or put on your finest for a more formal dinner at Mozart’s, which features a seasonal fresh sheet and popular European dishes like veal schnitzel and sauerbraten.

Beer is on the menu at nearly every establishment in town, and Leavenworth’s own Icicle Brewing Company features a stunning taproom where beer lovers can enjoy local pints. In the mood for something a little more stiff? Visitors can even imbibe on local spirits at Blue Spirits Distilling, located just across the street from Icicle.

With hiking, golf and water activities available in the summer, skiing, snowshoeing and other snow-centric activities in the winter, Leavenworth is brimming with things to do, no matter the season. And with the Enzian Inn’s central location and ample amenities, this Bavarian guest house is the perfect home-base for exploring all Leavenworth has to offer.
