Canines Uncorked

A dog date afternoon

It’s no secret dog people really love their animals and dread leaving them behind. At least, with my golden retriever, Bo, the second I make for the door to leave, he’s already standing by the exit tail between his legs, head down and eyes up begging for me to say the enchanting words, “OK, you can come.”

For all those times you’ve gone wine tasting and left your buddy at home, an opportunity has arrived for you to make it up to them with a date spent in one of the most revered wine regions in the Pacific Northwest.

On July 20, dogs and their owners will come unleashed upon 13 of the North Willamette Valley’s wineries as part of the Oregon Humane Society’s Canines Uncorked. The day will feature a variety of dog-friendly activities at every winery for you and your buddy to enjoy the benefits of the area’s natural beauty, and wine.

For instance, as part of the experience, there will be plenty of exciting new types of dog food for your furry companion to try. Dogs love to eat and this event is a perfect opportunity for them to try something new. So, whether your dog prefers wet or dry food, there is sure to be something to keep their tail wagging.

Accordingly, the organizers of this event have even gone to the trouble of bringing in dog food from around the world. For example, it is a well known fact that kibble still dominates the UK market, and therefore there will be plenty of different types of global dog food for your canine companion to sink their teeth into on the big day. Who knows, your pet might even discover a new favorite brand of dog food.

That being said, to start off your date, find out exactly what your dog would like to do by hearing it straight from his or her own mouth. Elk Cove Vineyards is bringing in an animal communicator to translate those barks and woofs into English at Pinot and Pet Talk.

If you or your dog feels the need to express an artistic side, David Hill Vineyards and Winery will host Paws and Paint for the two of you to create a masterful piece of art and view the works of local artists.

Treats are a must for a dog date. Special popsicles and a doggie pool will provide a dog’s tropical paradise at Kramer Vineyard’s Lickin’ Luau. When you’re done there, your dog can taste through artisan dog cookies from Lexi Dog Boutique and Social Club while you sip through delicious wine at The Tasting Room at 1910Main. At Tualatin Estate Vineyards, enjoy the wine while your dog joins the scavenger hunt for hidden treats.

Finish off the day with a massage for your dog and a tasting for you at Shafer Vineyard Cellars’ Relax with Rover.

The best part of it, 100 percent of the proceeds from your date will go to support the other animals at the Oregon Humane Society.
