Bad Dog Distillery Grandpa’s Likker

by | Oct 23, 2015

In Arlington, a relatively pastoral town in Washington’s northern Snohomish County, a mantra like “simply done” suits the city’s only distillery. Named for the house hound, Hank, Bad Dog Distillery (which admits on their website that Hank really isn’t a bad dog at all) was started in 2012 by husband-and-wife team Dave and Shelly McGlothern. With a family heritage of moonshining on Dave McGlothern’s side, the couple took their roots to where they’ve rooted, providing a product and service to the Arlington community that was missing before the distillery’s entry.

In a nod to the family history of bootlegging, Bad Dog has released an unaged whiskey that took home the cake during our Best of the Northwest competition. A major merit of Grandpa’s Likker is that it doesn’t try to do too much. With a bit of bark and a bit of bite, this unaged whiskey largely lets its sweet corn base shine through, which delivers bourbon-y sweetness from start to finish. Along the way, catch coexisting notes of dried grass and maple.
