They say not to judge a book by its cover but when it comes to cocktails, often the first impression is the lasting one. Whether it’s a beautiful garnish, intriguing glassware or an alluring aroma that knocks you off your stool, the cocktail you will remember is the cocktail that shows you something special right off the bat!
Pickles are all the rage these days and being a huge pickle fan myself I am always on the lookout for new garnishes for Bloody Marys and martinis. TabbyCat Pickling Co. is a Seattle-based family business specializing on new takes of classic favorites using all organic farm fresh produce. From Hot Rods (spicy pickled carrot sticks) to Cinnabeets Pickled Beets, these varieties will get your Bloody Mary garnish on!
Bloody Scandi
Inspired by a recent trip to Portland, I combined House Spirits Krogstad aquavit with Demitri’s Bloody Mary seasoning, a pinch of fresh dill, tomato juice, and garnished it all up with TabbyCat Cinnabeets. I personally would add some pickled herring too—go for it if you’re so Nordically-inclined!
Makes 1 drink
1 ½ ounces House Spirits Krogstad aquavit (or vodka)
¾ ounce Demitri’s Extra Horseradish Bloody Mary Seasoning
4 ounces tomato juice
1 pinch of chopped fresh dill
Garnish: TabbyCat Cinnabeets Pickled Beets, cucumber spear and other pickled items of your liking, plus one fresh dill sprig
Measure the aquavit, Demitri’s, tomato juice and dill into a tall glass. Fill with ice and stir. Garnish to your heart’s desire.
