In honor of Idaho’s first recognized grape-growing region, the Snake River Valley, Coiled Wines names itself and its wines for the land it comes from. The well-drained volcanic soils mixed in lake sediment from long ago floods, along with the dry climate and high elevations allow for these unique wines to showcase their terrior and ripen into ideal veraison. Coiled proprietor and winemaker Leslie Preston pays tribute to the Snake River Valley with her busty and boisterous 2010 Black Mamba red blend. Dark and powerful, like the venomous African Black Mamba snake, the blend is comprised of some of the biggest, blackest, boldest varietals out there—Syrah, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah, then aged in French oak for an extra…bite. Black currants, blackberries, black licorice and plum with savory mint and dusted cocoa powder entrance the nose while the black fruit, chocolate and gripping oak tannins coat the palate for a lingering, hissing finish.
