7 Budget-Wise NW Wines for National Wine Day

by | May 23, 2017

Did you know that May 25 — this upcoming Thursday — is National Wine Day? One day out of the year we celebrate our favorites, but some of us don’t mind celebrating great Pacific Northwest wine for the remaining 364. For those who can’t settle on one variety, this list is for you. Don’t let your wallet hold you back from splurging on these affordable, Northwest favorites — each for under $20.

Columbia Crest Winery | H3 Sauvignon Blanc, Horse Heaven Hills | $15 | This winery and online exclusive bottle is one of the many wines by Columbia Crest from the esteemed Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Bright, fragrant citrus on the nose and notes of mineral pear and a clean finish make this Washington wine easily approachable.

The Great Oregon Wine Co. | Rascal Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley | $14 | A true fruit-forward, Willamette Valley Pinot Noir with notes of dark cherry; ready to pair with your next meal. The Rascal series is a tribute to Great Oregon Wine Co.’s “favorite furry friend,” with proceeds supporting the National Humane Society.

Waterbrook Winery | Pinot Gris, Columbia Valley | $12 | The Waterbrook Pinot Gris is your perfect companion to lighter fare. It carries a balanced taste with a touch of residual sweetness, with Asian pear aromatics and a slight pucker of stone fruit.

Evolution Wine | Lucky No. 9 White Blend, Oregon | $15 | Nine grape varietals — including Muscat, Chardonnay and white Riesling — mingle and harmonize in this fresh blend, for you to savor in its off-dry splendor. There’s a lot going on: expect a lively mix of stone and tropical fruits, mild peach and lemon meringue.

Columbia Winery | Merlot, Columbia Valley | $15 | This 2014 vintage offers a complex flavor profile of plum, dark berries, sweet oak and baking spices for a long, fruity finish. Spread among friends and savor a bottle with your next steak dinner.

Gray Monk Estate Winery | Latitude 50 Red, Okanagan Valley | $13 | The Latitude 50 Red is a medium-bodied blend of BC-grown Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Malbec. Deep cherry and floral aromas dances along on the nose; slowly sip for a spicy, dark fruit affair. Pack a bottle on your way to a picnic with friends.

Upper Five Vineyard | Rosé of Grenache, Rogue Valley | $18 | This small, certified-organic vineyard produces a vibrant Grenache rosé with bright acidity and delicate fruit flavors. Serve this blushing beauty chilled. But get your hands on soon, Upper Five wines tend to sell out quickly.
