To help celebrate Halloween in the Pacific Northwest, these seasonal cocktails from three local watering holes will make your evening outings spooky and filled with laughter — maniacal or not. If you don’t live within a reasonable distance to make it to these spots, you can recreate these cocktails at home with ease for your weekend bash.
Richmond Redrum Cocktail | Curve | Richmond, BC
Located within the River Rock Casino Resort, the Curve lounge has a sophisticated ambience situated on the beautiful Fraser River in Richmond, British Columbia. The lounge is located inside the resort in the lobby with access to the marina and boardwalk. As homage to the Britannia Shipyards and its spooky nautical history, Curve creates a cocktail based on the naval spirit, rum, and borrows features from the classic undead cocktail, “The Zombie.” This detailed cocktail — which uses three different imported rum and tops with tonic and soda from hybrid brewer Philips Brewing Co. in Victoria, BC — might sound challenging but it is worth the creativity and sure to pack a punch.
3/4 ounce Kraken Black Spiced rum
3/4 ounce Sailor Jerry rum
3/4 ounce Captain Morgan Spiced rum
1/4 ounce Galliano
1/2 ounce honey syrup (1:1, honey:water)
1/2 ounce fresh-squeezed lime
1 ounce Phillips Fermentorium Philosopher’s Brew tonic
1 ounce Phillips Soda Work Sparkmouth ginger soda
1 ounce grenadine
Lime wedge, for garnish
Combine first six ingredients in cocktail shaker and pour over crushed iced in a high ball glass. Top with tonic, ginger soda and blood-red grenadine drizzled over the drink.
Princess Angeline | Miller’s Guild | Seattle
Miller’s Guild is here to prove Halloween isn’t just for kids with their seasonal beverage, Princess Angeline. This cocktail pays tribute to the eldest daughter of Chief Seattle, said to be the ghost of the famous Pike Place Market. The historical tail carries on through this smoky local whiskey-based limited edition beverage that is served exclusively through October 31st.
1.5 oz. OOLA Distillery smoked whiskey
0.5 oz. Crème de cassis liqueur
0.5 oz. Rossbacher herbal liqueur
Beet shrub, or another shrub, for rim
Spiced sugar, for rim
Wide orange peel, for garnish
Combine in a cocktail shaker, fill with ice and stir. Line the rim of a coupe glass with beet shrub, dip rim into spiced sugar and pour the cocktail in. Garnish with wide orange peel.
The Black Widow Manhattan | Speakeasy 33 | Bandon, OR
Speakeasy 33 is the best-kept secret off the coast of Oregon in Bandon Dunes. They stick to the classics when making cocktails, but with a personal spin on each recipe. For the month of October, a Halloween-inspired Manhattan is featured, appealing to most whiskey lovers. This specialty cocktail is made and served at the Speakeasy 33 location, however it is easy to recreate at home for all your Halloween festivities.
1 ounce Old Forester bourbon
1 ounce Evan Williams Single Barrel bourbon
1/2 ounce Averna amaro
1/2 ounce R. Jelenik fernet
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash whiskey barrel-aged bitters
1 brandied cherry, for garnish
Combine in a cocktail shaker, fill with ice and stir. Serve over a large ice cube and garnished with brandied cherry.
