5 Local Sips to Celebrate Pride Month

by | Jun 4, 2019

Each year, members and allies of the LGBTQ community come together to commemorate the events of the 1969 Stonewall Riots with Pride events celebrated throughout the month of June. This year happens to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the 45th anniversary of Seattle Pride. Whether you were already planning on donning your rainbow attire and attending a parade or two, one easy (and tasty) way to support and celebrate the occasion throughout the month is by enjoying libations from these local Pacific Northwest producers.

Pride Wines | Hip Chicks Do Wine

This Portland-based winery has supported Portland Pride for 13 years and offers not just one but three different wines to commemorate the month’s festivities. Choose among Pride Wines’ Loud and Proud Red, Out and Proud White and Sappho’s Sweet Delight. Purchase these limited wines online or — better yet — stop by the tasting room and pick up a bottle during the Portland Pride Festival, happening this year on June 15 and 16.

Pride Pilsner | Occidental Brewing

Wrapped in a gradient rainbow, Portland-based Occidental Brewing got a head start on the June festivities and released its Pride Pilsner cans in May. In addition to the release, the brewery also has launched a social media campaign promising to donate $2 to Basic Rights Oregon — an organization that works for transgender rights in the state — for every Instagram post featuring its beer that uses the hashtag #ProstToPride. The brewery pledged a minimum of $1000 and a maximum of $5000 for the duration of the campaign, which runs until June 30.

Reveal Pale Ale | Hop Valley Brewing Co.

Acquired by MillerCoors in 2016, Springfield, Oregon-based Hop Valley Brewing Co. offers its Reveal Pale Ale for the month of June in honor of Pride. Ambassadors from Oregon, Washington and California’s LGBTQ communities collaborated in creating the beer’s recipe, name and packaging. A local LGBTQ nonprofit receives a portion of the proceeds made from the beer. A tasty brew, Reveal Pale Ale is available in bottles and on tap at various West Coast locations.

GLITTERis Pride Ale | Elysian Brewing

The one and only (and quite possibly one of the most fabulous people out there) Jonathan Van Ness of Netflix’s popular “Queer Eye” has teamed up with Elysian Brewing and is coming to Seattle. As the official beer of Seattle Pride, Elysian Brewing is donating a portion of the proceeds from GLITTERis Pride Ale to the organization, which puts on the month-long festivities. Grab a pack of this fruity beer and make a toast to love — and keep your eyes peeled for Jonathan on the streets of Capitol Hill when he comes and officiates a lucky couple’s wedding!

Limited Edition Rose Bubbles | House Wines

Created by Washington winemaker Charles Smith, House Wines offers an inexpensive and very practical option for wine to take to the park, house party or just your own living room. House Wines’ Limited Edition Rosé Bubbles comes in a rainbow can and benefits the Human Rights Campaign. For every 24-can case sold, House Wines will donate $2, which gives you all the more reason to snag a case the next time you have any wine needs.
