Choosing liquors to feature as Daily Sips, I aim for variety, spacing out vodkas, whiskeys, gins and so on. Still, having recently featured Oregon Spirit Distillers’ take on spiced rum, I can’t help feeling like this spiced rum from 3 Howls is in a different category—the former is exceptional in its experimentalism, while Seattle-based 3 Howls’ is exceptional in its adherence to a classic style.
This rum, one of four from 3 Howls, is deep golden in color and richly complex in flavor, with just the right amount of brown sugary sweetness followed by overlapping waves of caramel, vanilla and cinnamon, and a hint of smoke on the finish.
