1.6 Mile Dinner

by | Jul 9, 2013

With so many companies and farmers referring to their goods as local, the term itself can become a little ambiguous when searching for a meal crafted from nearby ingredients. This asks the question: can anything within the Pacific Northwest be considered local, or should the term be reserved for things within walking distance? When you’re in a lush, abundant wine country, less than two miles should be about right.

In British Columbia’s Similkameen Valley, renowned chefs won’t be looking farther than the variety of artisan producers from within 1.6 miles of Orofino Vineyards to craft a delectable five-course dinner in the winery’s elegant courtyard. Noted as the, “true farm to plate experience,” the only way this meal could be more local is if you grew it in your own backyard.

But the radar for the 1.6 Mile Dinner doesn’t stop at the local food. The evenings’ hosts, Orofino Vineyards, are breaking out a selection of their best wines to pair with the freshly prepared meal.

At this annual dining extravaganza, renowned chefs and owners of the celebrated Joy Road Catering, Cameron Smith and Dana Ewart, will be cooking up a feast for the group of hungry locavores. The evening will commence with celebratory sparkling wine and bites of canapés followed by the dinner and a silent auction. Proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will continue the local theme by supporting the nearby Cawston Community Kobau Park.

While eating local here is key, the dinner is open to anyone interested in celebrating the beauty and fruitful abundance of the Similkameen Valley.

For those traveling, transportation options from Penticton and Osoyoos are available to get you to and from dinner for $25. Those traveling from Kelowna are encouraged to reach out to the winery because an additional transportation option may be added.

To further the experience, the event has partnered with the Watermark Beach Resort in Osoyoos to offer special rates on one and two bedroom units for those attending the dinner. Just let the resort know you’re with the dinner at Orofino Vineyard.

Saturday, August 10 || 5:30 pm || 2152 Barcelo Rd., Cawston, BC || Tickets: $150 (CDN) Contact Orofino Vineyards at (250) 499-0068 or admin@orofinovineyards.com for reservations
