Wine Country Comforts at McMinnville’s Third Street Flats

by | Dec 7, 2016

Settle in at the Third Street Flats in the heart of McMinnville, Oregon, wine country.

Just 90 minutes from Portland, in the heart of Oregon wine country, is the charming, growing city of McMinnville. Pinot Noir lovers have long known about this haven of great wine and the town itself is home to the International Pinot Noir Celebration, a yearly bowing down to the grape that grows so well in the area. With great wine comes great food and great lodging, like the Third Street Flats in downtown McMinnville.

With two sections to the location, the original was opened at the Historic McMinnville Bank in 2009. The second followed in April 2013 at the Odd Fellows Lodge. The flats are spacious, modernly decorated units, like apartments you’d love to move into if you were to just arrive in a new town. With kitchens, high ceilings and the most comfortable beds imaginable, the flats are modern and chic despite being housed in some of the oldest buildings in town — the Historic McMinnville Bank dates back to 1886 and the Odd Fellows Lodge was built in 1909.

At the HMB, four flats are available and seven at the Odd Fellows, five of which have two bedrooms for those group or family trips when a little more space is ideal. Each flat has its own unique theme, with decorations carefully curated to enhance the spirit. From Pied-a-Terre to Pearl and Retreat to Rustique, there’s a style that will inspire, comfort or delight all who step away from the traditional hotel experience to a more aspirational living experience.

The designs are different for a reason, thanks to the origins of the Third Street Flats. At the original Historic McMinnville Bank location, four teams were recruited, then tasked with creating inspired spaces with established budgets and design parameters. The whole project was filmed and turned into the 3rd Street Flats Design Challenge, with 2,000 people voting on their favorite transformation. From that group, two original design teams came back to the fold for the Odd Fellows project, with seven new concepts developed for the space.

Though amenities differ by flat, the crazy comfy beds are consistent across each room, with Englander mattresses manufactured in Oregon and purchased locally. Lie down on one and you’ll probably end up considering taking home more than just locally made wine.
