Where to Drink in Wallace, Idaho

by | Jun 17, 2025

There’s a little former mining town in northern Idaho by the name of Wallace. You may know it from its starring role as the charming backdrop of the 1997 disaster film, Dante’s Peak. But it’s way more than a picturesque town nestled in some rugged topography. The little city of less than 1,000 has got historic buildings galore, occupied by some great watering holes very much worth your time. Whether Wallace is your destination or on the way to vacation draws like Glacier National Park, spending some time there is key. Legend has it, gold was found in a stream near here in 1882. And while most of the precious minerals have since been extracted, you can still strike it rich in one of the town’s excellent bars or pubs.

Wallace Brewing | 610 Bank Street

Set on Bank Street, Wallace’s namesake brewery launched in 2009 and is now a 15-barrel operation. The beers pay homage to the city’s rich past — particularly the bordellos and mining operations — with fitting names like the 1910 Black Lager or Hard Hat Hazy. Don’t overlook the refreshing summer-ready options as well, from the U&I Wheat to the Higher Elevation, a Bohemian lager brewed with local huckleberries.

The Fainting Goat | 516 Bank Street

Occupying another cool old building, The Fainting Goat operates out of a space with vaults that used to hold lots of silver. Now, it’s home to a friendly staff and some great pub grub like cowboy mac ’n cheese to accompany the drinks. Find a table and order a pour from the slick wine bar or opt for a local draft beer. The pizzas and pretzels are tasty, the atmosphere is all brick and wood, and there’s a cool little wine cellar worth exploring.

Cogs Gastropub | 424 Sixth Street

There’s fun to be had at Cogs, whether you happen upon a karaoke night or just drop in for some grub – think pulled pork and overloaded chili dogs, with special dinners featuring local deer and elk a few times a year. There’s outdoor seating for people and mountain watching, and the bartenders are always coming up with signature drinks. Look out for local Idaho breweries on draft like North Idaho Mountain Brew and Radio Brewing Co. from Kellogg.

Albertini’s Gem Bar | 220 Sixth Street

Albertini’s Gem Bar is for those who want some craft in their cocktails. The bar features a luxe Western interior, outfitted with the likes of moose heads, leather chairs and fireplaces. Musicians tend to play the place, creating a live soundtrack for exploring the beverage program. The steaks have a ravenous following and taste all the better with a well-made Whiskey Sour or Old Fashioned. And if the evening stretches out, there are lofts upstairs where you can stay put.

The Brooks Hotel Restaurant & Lounge | 500 Cedar Street

A proper hotel eatery, The Brooks specializes in breakfast and lunch. Kickstart your day here with chicken fried steak or huckleberry pancakes and wash it down with a Bloody Mary or Mimosa. The lunch menu features some local beers and, when it’s time for the check, you’re just a stone’s throw from other adventures, like Sierra Silver Mine Tour or the pristinely preserved Oasis Bordello Museum.
