Vancouver Island Brewery Hermannator Ice Bock

by | Jan 30, 2014

It’s hard to believe this Victoria classic ice bock is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year. I remember drinking this beer in junior high school (shhh!!) and having the revelation that beer didn’t have to be disgusting. This beer was awarded Best in Show at the 2013 BC Beer Awards, confirming my so-much-earlier affirmations.

Brewed in limited batches each year, the Vancouver Island Brewery Hermannator Ice Bock was first introduced by Hermann, one of VIB’s original brewmasters, during the holiday as a unique gift to his closest friends and customers. Crafted at 9.5 percent ABV, it’s certainly a winter warmer. The German Eisbok is crafted with a blend of chocolate and caramel malts and cold aged in the brewery’s cellar for more than three months. Roasted chestnuts, softly sweet malt and mildly bitter dark chocolate, with a creamy and densely textured mouthfeel and baking spice finish, this Victoria classic dark beer has certainly stood up to the test of time.
