Don’t hate, participate in the can revolution. Craft beer and cider have jumped on the bandwagon—incessantly evolving the process with aluminum innovation and creative alterations to defer the metallic flavors that can occur and defy the haughty expectations of the revitalized packaging technique. But wine… Wine has a steeper uphill battle and charging to the front line is Willamette Valley’s Union Wine Company. With three brands in the shop marketed as “wines for everyone,” Union’s Underwood label has picked up its weapons for combat with the novel and avant-garde Pinot Noir In A Can. All war metaphors aside, the juice is pretty damn good. Pop a top and drink straight from the can (although a glass is recommended), the nose is primed with bright cherry, cocoa and earth while the palate, albeit straightforward, is straight-up Oregon Pinot Noir with juicy cherry and raspberry fruits, easy mineral tones and animated acid.
