The Other Southern Oregon: 48 Hours in Klamath Falls

by | Sep 12, 2023

There’s another southern Oregon, on the eastern side of the Cascades in and around Klamath Falls. No, it doesn’t get the credit or crowds that more famous valleys like the Rogue and Applegate get, but therein lies the charm. Klamath has its own little thing going on, and it’s way more than just a photogenic lake with easy access to Oregon’s only national park.

A great way to take in the area is by way of Running Y Resort. The resort is set just outside of Klamath Falls proper and features a golf course, spa, lodge, vacation homes, pool and more. Visitors can enjoy a good meal on the patio of the Ruddy Duck, the lodge’s restaurant, while ogling at circling birds of prey or wild coyotes wandering through the wooded surroundings. Kid and dog friendly, the resort touts an arcade, tennis courts, hiking trails, and a village of shops, including a great general store with a surprisingly good beer, wine and spirits selection.

If dining at the resort, seek out the chicken and waffles or chilaquiles for breakfast. For lunch or dinner, try the fish tacos, from-scratch soups, burger, or pork chop, served with pineapple-ancho chili chutney. Several local beers are on draft and the wine list stresses Northwest producers.

Beer enthusiasts should be on the lookout for offerings from Skyline Brewing Company. Set in a century-old former milking parlor, the operation turns out everything from well-made IPAs to more adventurous and summer-ready options, like a Helles lager or raspberry wheat beer. The label lacks a tasting room but its work can be found at a lot of the local eateries and watering holes.

Speaking of, The Falls Taphouse is another one to put on the list if craft beer is your calling. The beer garden has a great rooftop and there are plenty of food options just paces away, like Maria’s Taqueria food cart. Scores of West Coast beers are poured here, from local options to esteemed California labels like Henhouse. Brevada is also deserving of a mention. The cafe and pub hybrid turns out a number of solid salads and sandwiches, which can be washed down with a good local beer or glass of wine. There are specialty coffee drinks as well as ciders, wine platters, and Skyline beer served later in the day.

Rosterolla Wine Company is an excellent bottle shop specializing in wine, sake and beer. The shop and distributor has access to some 17,000 wines, meaning you’re bound to run into a new favorite producer or varietal. If you’re after an actual vineyard experience, head over to 12 Ranch Wines. The producer, located 16 miles away in nearby Bonanza, focuses on tiny lots of Merlot, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Cab and Syrah.

Italiana’s is a classic Italian-American joint where you get healthy portions, zero frills and a nice selection of gelato for dessert. Also of note is Starvin’ Marvin, a real Klamath original. The family restaurant launched in 1997 and specializes in Americana grub. Hop over to Donut Burger for — you guessed it — donuts or burgers and Basin Martini bar on Main Street for a little luxury as the chic bar features tasty pasta and some of the best cocktails in town. For something on the water, check out Harriman Springs, boasting views of the eponymous creek and mountain and watercraft pulling in and out of the lake.

Ashland and Medford may be larger and have more dining and drinking options but Klamath holds its own. And if charm and rugged beauty is your cup of tea, it’s an ideal stop in picturesque southern Oregon.
