BEER THURSDAY: Coal Harbour Brewing Company 311 Helles Lager

In the industrial block of Triumph Street in east Vancouver, B.C., Coal Harbour Brewing Company opened its doors in early 2012 to the beer thirsty folk of the hugely international city. Founded by food and beverage industry vet, Ken Boparai, and led by University of California Davis studied head brewer, Ethan Allured, Coal Harbour aimed its arrow at approachable, everyday brews for all types of everyday drinkers and landed on point. For the quaffable, easy-drinking department, the brewery offers an authentic take on German-style lager with the 311 Helles Lager, even in legitimate respects to the “Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516” which stated that beer ingredients consist only of water, 100% malted barley and German hops. The 500-year-old throwback comes at you with supple citrus, bread and bittersweet caramel malt aromas, while the palate is light, clean and crisp — asking for a sunny spring afternoon to crack the can open to.
