Skookum Brewery Mammoth Jack Double India Pale Ale

by | May 21, 2015

Until summer 2012, Skookum Brewery was more affectionately known as “Beer in the Woods.” The Arlington, Washington brewery was just that—a brewpub and taproom off a rural road in Arlington, a road that was also the driveway for several residences whose dwellers were less than pleased with the budding brewery they shared borders with. After a few years of putting up with limited hours and having to turn away local ale fanatics, Skookum opened up a new location across the street from the Arlington Municipal Airport—a welcome zone for noise. The expansion—which includes an exposed production facility with 10 barrel system, kitchen, bar and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating—has also allowed the brewery to bottle for the first time and introduce their lesser known beers to the better known crowds.

Skookum kicks this off with the Mammoth Jack Double India pale ale, a massive mouthful of beer. The big kid version of their Jackass IPA, the Mammoth Jack is bigger, bolder, maltier, hoppier but still holds balance while on the beam. The bouquet is rich with toffee, oily grapefruit and orange peels, pine sap and earth and the palate delivers the kick in the teeth this beer promises—citrus and bitter hops with malts to smooth it over.
