Ever been out ‘til the wee hours of the morning—we’re talking shut-the-bars-down-status—and left said bars insanely hungry with nowhere to eat? All the establishments in the neighborhood have closed their doors for the night (morning?) and that includes eateries, too! But don’t fret. You’re not alone in this conundrum, and one of Seattle’s newest culinary additions and Portland transplant, Sizzle Pie, understands your bevvy-induced pain.
Open Sunday through Thursday until 3 am, and weekends until 4 am, Sizzle Pie knows how to keep up with Seattle’s Capitol Hill crowd. Not only are their hot pizza slices accessible nearly every hour you may need ‘em, but they’re also more than satisfying.
Nestled into a 90s grunge-like space behind roll-up garage doors, Sizzle Pie is community-oriented, feeding off of Capitol Hill’s offbeat character. Co-owner Matt Jacobson says that the restaurant donates its cuisine to community organizations tied to art and music, so the underground music-scene vibe is supremely befitting. “Our identity makes us distinct,” says Jacobson of the Northwest and of Sizzle Pie’s attempt to capture its essence.
In light of keeping the restaurant accessible and community friendly, Sizzle Pie also caters to the vegan crowd. Jacobson says that a huge goal was to create vegan-style pizzas that even meat-eaters love—so don’t be afraid to branch out and hit the vegan side of the glass case even if you consider yourself a strict carnivore. Choose from pies topped with everything from shredded buffalo jackfruit to Daiya cheese to vegan pepperoni and of course, countless veggies.
But if meat you must, go for the Pig Destroyer topped with pepperoni, meatball and bacon or the fiery High on Fire featuring spicy pulled pork. For the cheese lovers in the house, The Four Horsemen offers a feast of mozzarella, white cheddar, goat cheese and even ricotta.
While you peruse the menu, keep an eye out for Sizzle Pie’s seasonal offerings as well. Jacobson is especially excited about the Thai Times. Chicken, mandarin oranges (surprisingly tasty on pizza!), white onions, fresh arugula and a drizzle of Thai Sweet Chili sauce come together to form a spicy, citrusy union.
Regardless of pizza choice, you’ll want to leave room for some of Sizzle Pie’s secret-ingredient house-made vegan ranch, a creamy, herbaceous dollop of heaven—just one of the unique sauces created by co-owner Mikey McKennedy.
Of course, don’t forget to wash down whatever slice you may choose with one of the pizzeria’s craft beer or wine options (many Northwest favorites are on tap, showing the bar’s Portland roots with lesser known breweries) or head over to the pizzeria’s next-door bar, Dark Bar, for round two.
With night owl hours to special dietary requests, this Portland-born restaurant just may have us Northwest folk calculated down to a science, starting with your choice of sauce (New Deal Vodka Cream Sauce, anyone?) and ending with a combo of the meatiest or non-meatiest pie toppings your brain can conjure at said early hour.
