A Celebration of Salmon Awareness in Northwest Wineries at Seattle’s Wine World & Spirits
Usually when we think about salmon and wine, it’s a consideration of how best to pair the one with the other. But wineries around the Pacific Northwest are starting to consider wine and salmon from another perspective: namely, how winemaking practices affect their fishy friends.
While organic and biodynamic wines are increasingly spotlighted for their positive environmental impact, we don’t focus much on the specific beneficiaries of responsible winemaking. By spotlighting the plight of Pacific Northwest salmon, the Portland-based Salmon-Safe program has become “one of the nation’s leading eco labels with more than 60,000 acres of farm and urban lands certified in Oregon, Washington, California, and British Columbia.”
Now the beverage industry has begun to throw its weight behind the campaign. Even as Northwest breweries and hops producers are beginning the certification process, over 250 regional vineyards have achieved Salmon-Safe status. The accreditation, denoted in hundreds of supermarkets by the group’s double-fished symbol, requires a vigorous scientific investigation into the runoff, agricultural sustainability and enhancement of native biodiversity on vineyard sites. More than half of Oregon’s Willamette Valley has been declared Salmon-Safe since the group was officially founded in 1997, and Washington and Oregon’s preeminent vineyards continue to follow suit.
After all that work, there has to be some sort of party! Join Sip Northwest and Stewardship Partners as we co-sponsor a tasting and celebration of Oregon and Washington’s Salmon-Safe wines and wineries, Sunday June 23 at Wine World in Seattle. Tickets are $10 and include samples poured by Hard Row to Hoe, King Estate, Amavi, Pepper Bridge, Seven Hills, Lopez Island Vineyards, Terra Blanca and Woodward Canyon. You’ll see for yourself – the wines taste all the more delicious for knowing their behind-the-scenes benefits. Proceeds benefits the Salmon-Safe program.
