Apple and pear orchards are nothing new to Washington’s East Wenatchee. Nor are they new to the Van Reenen family—on land first purchased by their great-grandfather, brothers Kevin and Mark Van Reenen have been producing ciders under the name of Neigel Vintners for the past few years until they recently went public, particularly so with their native pear varieties on the property. Now producing exclusively pear ciders, one of the brothers Van Reenen’s latest is the Cider Baron Hard Pear Cider—a tricky noble of pear cider that masks its riches of alcohol with aromas of quince, spice and Bosc pear and a palate of juicy pear with easy acid and sharp tartness. You’d be pressed to find this pear cider stands at a tall 6.6 percent ABV. Pear up!
