McMenamins Black Widow Porter

by | Oct 23, 2014

Hailing from what’s becoming the craft-beer mecca of the U.S. in Portland, McMenamins has been brewing the nectar of the gods since before it was hip. Established in 1983 (though, the founders started another pub a decade prior), the brewery has since expanded to more than 60 locations primarily across Oregon. Needless to say, there is a splash of rich history and decades of experience in every sip of McMenamins’ beer.

The brewery’s Black Widow Porter—its seasonal Halloween beer—has been an annual treat, no trick, since 1991. A pint of this beer starts off sweet and light with notes of caramel and coffee, but finishes strong with a surprising tingle of spice and a hint of aged orange rind all across the palate. The taste of autumn is apparent but subtle, not in an in-your-face kind of way (cough, pumpkin spice latte, cough). Get tangled in this dark spider’s web—it’s a spooky good way to celebrate All Hollow’s Eve.
