Liberty Ciderworks Turncoat Dry Hop Cider

by | Feb 17, 2015

Business is good for Liberty Ciderworks, the young Spokane urban cidery that quickly moved from a hobby to a booming profession. Since launching in July 2013 then introducing Spokane (and much of Washington State) to a cidery tap room, Liberty is continuing to expand and doing so with its first full-time hire outside of owner Rick Hastings and his partner Austin Dickey. “We’re still a tiny operation compared to many in the region,” says Hastings in an email. “Our first hire is a big thing for us, and we’re hoping it’s just the beginning.”

The line of ciders soldiers on and adapts to the cidery’s growth as well—with subtle changes that hone the details, like the Turncoat Dry Hop cider which will soon be released with a revised hybrid hop. The current rendition is an English pub-style cider, Americanized with dry hops for a New World spin. The nose portrays characteristics of candied citrus rind, vanilla, earthy oak and fresh applesauce laces with flowers. The palate might surprise, despite the aromatic weight and hue of sweetness, the mouthfeel is bold and dry, with tannin and acid matched by green apple, a dusty minerality and a citrus crispness.
