ICONIC OREGON COAST HOTEL BEGINS A NEW CHAPTER

The Hotel Sylvia, a seaside literary retreat previously known as the Sylvia Beach Hotel, will reopen its doors in July unveiling a complete renovation

Newport, Oregon (June 11, 2025) — For the better part of the last century, travelers have enjoyed the panoramic ocean views and quiet charm of an historic 21-room hotel perched on a cliff above Nye Beach, Oregon. Most recently known as the Sylvia Beach Hotel, it has been a literary-themed lodging since the late 1980s that became a haven for book-lovers and writers. Purchased in 2024 by Portland-based VIP Hospitality Group, the Hotel Sylvia will reopen in July continuing its legacy as a boutique literary retreat. The picturesque four story hotel has been completely renovated from top to bottom and preserved for generations to come. Reservations are now open for stays at the Hotel Sylvia beginning on July 1, 2025 at hotelsylvia.com. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for July 15th.

“We are honored to steward this historic hotel into a new era, while celebrating its past,” says Jenny Nelson, Vice President of VIP Hospitality Group. “We’re so excited to welcome guests back to this special place and offer them a place to disconnect, relax, and reconnect with themselves and one other.”

The hotel is named after the legendary 20th century bookseller and publisher Sylvia Beach. Perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, the Hotel Sylvia’s breakfast cafe, lobby, sun decks, and most guestrooms boast stunning views of the coast, including Yaquina Head Lighthouse to the north. A dedication to literary culture is felt in detail throughout, including original artwork preserved from the Sylvia Beach Hotel and bookshelves in every room. Each of the 22 guest rooms (an additional room was added in the renovation) throughout three floors has a literary theme: seven are dedicated to specific authors, and the others are tastefully decorated with a literary genre (Drama, Fantasy, Historical, Literary Non-Fiction, Mystery, and Romance) and remain free of screens or phones. Steps from the hotel is the charming Nye Beach neighborhood with its shops, galleries and cafes, and Newport’s historic bayfront, seafood restaurants, beaches, and aquarium just a short drive away.

Hotel Sylvia’s interior was designed by Vida Design, inspired by its natural surroundings and the golden hour. Experiential design and branding were created by Bri Romancier of Fourth Wall Creative. The hotel has been updated with an emphasis on comfort, filled with books and cozy places to read them in every room. Hotel Sylvia is also a place that fosters community, with a number of indoor and outdoor public spaces to gather over puzzles, board games, an espresso, or a toast to the sunset. Cafe Sylvia on the ground floor serves as an oceanfront breakfast cafe in the morning, and then its tables are open for guests to use as they wish for the rest of the day and evening. The Oceanfront Deck off the cafe now has a gas firepit to gather around, for morning coffee, wave watching or taking in the golden hour at the close of the day. The Lobby Lounge now has a fireplace surrounded by comfortable chairs, and the Garden Deck is a perfect place to soak in the sun and conversation.
