Redmond, Washington’s Hi-Fi Brewing has the feel of a small town pub. Walking in might not cause the record to drop and the regulars to swivel on their stools to stare but there is always a vinyl spinning and dedicated locals are perched at the counter. Grab a seat at the bar top and listen to bartender and patrons alike as they spit local politics or wax poetically about how Led Zepplin’s John Bonham was the greatest drummer of all time (#truth). With music on one pedestal and beer on the other, Hi-Fi is comprised of three former homebrewers who are dedicated to “high fidelity” brewing techniques, just like those of the record industry in the 1960s where the end result was to make the record as authentic as the live performance. Striving to give the “truest expression of the brewer’s art,” all beer is brewed on a 15-barrel custom system made by Oregon-based AAA Metal Fabrication.
Beer titles typically have some sort of musical connection, like the Woofer (a loudspeaker designed to reproduce low frequencies) porter. Deep and rich smells of roasty caramel, cocoa, cola, root beer, clove and coffee bean are most distinct in the glass and mellow out into a creamy and rich fusion. The mouthfeel is round and soothing, with flavorsome and lingering mocha spice tones. The Woofer finishes firm with a lift of hops and should be enjoyed (if possible) on nitro.
